Peeling Nails And Cuticles
how does the weather impact nails?
Winter months can be drying for the skin as well as the nails. Windy weather evaporates moisture from the surface adding to the dryness.
Apply cuticle oil before retiring to bed to keep your cuticles and nails moisturized. This will help seal moisture and will help in this weather and season. You can also apply clear nail varnish which helps to protect the nail plate.
Any nail care one should follow?
Avoid acrylic and gel nails as much as possible as they will increase fragility and splitting of the nail
Keep nails and cuticles trimmed regularly to avoid snags. Keep filing nails so there are no sharp edges
When buffing nails use the file one way not both ways which will damage the nail further
Avoid using nails as a tool to pick, pull etc. use your finger pads to pick things
Moisturise with cuticle oil. Rub into the base of the nail over the cuticle as well as over the nail
Eat a diet rich in iron with green leafy vegetables, meat. Iron deficiency causes splitting nails
When in contact with chemicals use gloves to protect them from getting in contact with the substance.
Avoid frequent hand washing. Use moisturizing hand washes instead of soap. Moisturize hands immediately after washing
Supplementation with iron and biotin may be recommended too if the diet is not adequate
Clear nail polish will help dehydration to a certain extent. Check that you do not have bleeding cuticles or a severe nail disorder before applying varnishes in which case you should seek medical attention
Avoid soaking nails for longer periods in water. Use gloves to wash dishes
